The RE 1 was a space charge grid tube which was useful for portable battery powered equipment. The inner grid ran at about the same voltage as the plate and functioned to partially cancel out the normal space charge, allowing operation at much lower plate voltages than normal. The outer grid worked as a normal control grid.
